The Gorillaz’ “House of Kong” residency wrapped up last night at London’s Copper Box Arena with a bold finale. For their fourth and final show, the band debuted a brand-new album in full, joined by a parade of special guests.
The residency had already seen Gorillaz perform each of their previous albums: the self-titled debut on night one, Demon Days on night two, and Plastic Beach on night three (alongside selections from The Fall). Phones were banned from the much-hyped “mystery show” finale, as the group unveiled ten fresh tracks back-to-back with no encore.
According to those in attendance, some of the new songs are rumored to be titled “The Happy Dictator” (featuring Sparks), “Fresh Arrivals” (with Omar Souleyman and Yasiin Bey), and “The Sad God” (with Black Thought and Kara Jackson). Other surprise appearances included The Smiths’ Johnny Marr, Anoushka Shankar, IDLES’ Joe Talbot, Trueno, Gruff Rhys, and Paul Simonon.
Albarn had previously hinted ] that new music would close out the residency, telling The Times the upcoming album is “in four languages.” Though it appears we may be getting the new LP sooner than expected, an official release date has yet to be announced.
