It’s clear that Deftones have become a household name in the music industry. And if you’ve never experienced the raw, emotional journey they offer, then you’re truly missing out.
From their stark beginnings, Chino Moreno has led the band with haunting, brilliant vocals that have become their signature. Since forming in Sacramento, California, in 1988, they’ve been relentlessly pushing boundaries. Despite the tragic loss of their beloved bandmate Chi Cheng and the many challenges they’ve faced, Deftones have endured. This is a testament to their strength and creative evolution. Their longevity speaks volumes: they’re not just a band, they’re a legacy.
The latest album, Private Music, reveals yet another shift in sound and we’re absolutely here for it. Right out of the gate, “My Mind Is a Mountain” explodes with a mind-melting sonic deliverance that hits deep and grips your soul.
“Locked Up” grinds and pushes with relentless riffs, dragging us into their world with a heavy, melodic pull. The intensity is so palpable, it feels like you’re on stage with them, swallowed whole by the sound.
Then there’s “Ecdysis” — smooth, cunning, and soaked in nostalgia. This track instantly takes me back to old-school Deftones, with that familiar atmosphere only they can create.
One of my favorites, “Infinite Source,” feels like a love ballad to music itself. It’s as if their entire career has been distilled into this one breathtaking track. It gripped my heart completely, one of the most beautiful songs they’ve ever released.
“Milk of the Madonna” feels like it hails from a spiritual realm. Waves of sound crash and explode like an ocean storm, painting rich imagery through every note. The track seeps into a somber lull, so calm, reflective. But not before rising once again into a powerful, volcanic eruption. It’s a tidal wave of emotion and sound, and you can feel every surge.
“Metal dDream” is a psychedelic journey, a lustful, emotional trip into the green. The lyrics unveil a lush, almost surreal landscape where two lovers exist, wrapped in nature and desire. Like much of the album, there’s a common thread running through it, a dark atmosphere, yet passion fully envelops the songwriting. It’s haunting, romantic, and dreamlike. This is classic Deftones, but reimagined.
“Departing the body” Feels like when we leave our bodies, entering into the next realm. The light that awaits us, its calm and etherical notes pair with haunting vocals. I’m hoping this is how it feels when we cross over, calm and beautiful moments await us out of the dark and into the light.
The album is unquestionably provocative and feels very personal. It’s a collection of intense emotional experiences combining forces of darkness and light. Deftones are still evolving, but they know who they are. This record is a unique adventure that begs to be felt as much as it needs to be heard. It is more than just music; it’s an unforgettable primal experience.
