Foo Fighters Welcome New Drummer and Dust Off Rarities at Surprise Show

Foo Fighters delivered a surprise show in San Luis Obispo, California over the weekend, their first gig with new drummer Ilan Rubin.

“Everybody else has said it,” Grohl, proclaimed to the lucky 900 fans who crammed into Fremont Theater. “I finally get the opportunity to say, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, will you please welcome…’ The most badass motherfucker, Ilan Rubin, is playing drums in the Foo Fighters right now. It’s official. You can stamp the passport.”

Rubin, who previously played in Nine Inch Nails before replacing Josh Freese in Foo Fighters, was thunderous in his debut. The 37 year-old drummer blending seamlessly with Grohl and company, helping to deliver a dynamic 25-song set.

Notably, the performance included “Have It All,” “Exhausted” and the Foos’ version of “Winnebago” – three songs the group hadn’t performed live in more than a decade. Another tune, “Alone + Easy Target,” hadn’t been played since 2018. Clearly, the Foo Fighters were eager to dust off some forgotten gems during their first concert of 2025.

Videos and full set list from the performance can be found below. Foo Fighters have already announced a second surprise gig, this time at the Observatory in Santa Ana, California, for tonight (Sept. 15). These shows — coupled with strong rumors regarding new music — have fans eagerly eying Foo Fighters’ every move.
