Champion surfer turned reggae rock musician Makua is back with a catchy new single called “All I Ever Wanted.”
Produced by the acclaimed Jimmy Messer, Makua — full name Makua Rothman — blends his heartfelt vocals with shimmering guitar work. The lyrics reflect the singer’s own story, shaped by a childhood surrounded by gangs and drugs, adding raw weight to the track’s emotional core.
Despite such heavy subject matter, the the tune is engaging and accessible. Its upbeat tone stands in contrast to the lyrics, as the song bounces along to an intoxicating rhythm. These two elements make “All I Ever Wanted” a dynamic listen — Makua’s vulnerability invites fans in, while his rock and pop sensibilities turn the tune into an engrossing earworm.
We at Skratch N’ Sniff have been high on Makua for a while now, having featured several of his previous song on our radio show — including “God and the Devil,” “Pill E. DaKid” and his collaboration with rapped Wiz Khalifa, “Clear the Air.” Still, “All I Ever Wanted” feels like a turning point in the rising star’s career. It’s his most personal single to date and signals Makua’s continuing growth as an artist.
Makua’s set was one of the highlights at the recent Ohana festival, which took place Sept. 26-28 in Dana Point, CA. His performance included the live debut of “All I Ever Wanted,” as well as a cover of Jane’s Addiction’s “Been Caught Stealing,” with special guest Eddie Vedder joining in.
