Ace Frehley, the electrifying founding guitarist of Kiss, has died at the age of 74.
“We are completely devastated and heartbroken,” the rocker’s family said when confirming his passing. “ In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this earth,” the statement read. “We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter, and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others. The magnitude of his passing is of epic proportions, and beyond comprehension. Reflecting on all of his incredible life achievements, Ace’s memory will continue to live on forever!”
Earlier in the day, TMZ reported that Frehley was on life support. The guitarist’s sudden decline in health reportedly stemmed from a brain bleed caused by a fall several weeks ago. He had previously canceled remaining 2025 tour dates to focus on recovery.
Frehley co-founded Kiss in 1973 and was integral to the band’s sound. Known for his “Spaceman” persona, the ax-wielding guitarist left an imprint on many of the band’s biggest hits. Still, infighting with his bandmates – specifically, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley – led to Frehley’s exit in 1982.
Tension remained between the musicians even after Frehley’s departure, with he and his former bandmates regularly exchanging barbs via interviews. Still, the guitarist rejoined Kiss for their 1996 reunion tour and he was with them again in 2014 when the band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He did not take part in the band’s farewell tour, which ran from 2019 to 2023.
Outside of Kiss, Frehley enjoyed a successful solo career. His most recent album 10,000 Volts, was released in 2024.
