Trevor Horn, the renowned British musician and producer celebrated for his contributions to the Buggles and Art of Noise, has unveiled his latest creation, Echoes – Ancient & Modern, available through Deutsche Grammophon. The album features a rendition of Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools (Drank),” skillfully performed by Tori Amos. Immerse yourself in the captivating sounds of this new track.
In the liner notes for Echoes – Ancient & Modern, Horn engaged in a conversation about “Swimming Pools (Drank)” with the distinguished British rock journalist and critic, Paul Morley. Reflecting on the cover, Horn expressed, “I envisioned it as a literate, contemporary American standard—a rap composition open to reinterpretation. I aimed for something distinctly 21st-century, with original and eloquent lyrics. My longtime engineer, Tim Weidner, suggested this particular track. Tori Amos embraced the challenge of adapting Kendrick Lamar’s vibrant swagger and transformed it into an intensely cinematic experience. After exploring various rap songs, none resonated as clever and amusing. It establishes the tone like the opening of a song cycle.”
Echoes – Ancient & Modern features additional covers by Horn and his collaborators, including tracks by Depeche Mode (“Personal Jesus”), Nirvana (“Smells Like Teen Spirit”), Roxy Music (“Avalon”), Billy Idol (“White Wedding”), and more. This latest album follows the 2019 release, Trevor Horn Reimagines the Eighties.
