When tasked with producing two art pieces for a charity auction, Dave Grohl found himself procrastinating until the last minute, resulting in him sketching the creations on the very day they were scheduled for display and sale.
These whimsical outcomes are hastily drawn with a Sharpie on the reverse side of corrugated signs from the 2023 Sea.Hear.Now festival in Asbury Park, N.J. One artwork showcases Grohl’s guidelines for crafting a beer bong, while the other illustrates plans for repurposing a cassette tape to conceal hash.
The bidding for these pieces closes on December 27, with the initial bids standing at $6,501 and $5,100 respectively. Grohl, who headlined the festival with the Foo Fighters and crafted the artworks, is poised to generate a minimum of $11,600, with the proceeds to be distributed among seven charitable causes.
In a video clip, Grohl mentions, “We used to make these diagrams for runners backstage at shows – ‘Go to Home Depot and get this shit.’” He reminisces about how the runners would hurriedly assemble the items before their performances.
Each year, art is gathered from musicians performing at the festival to be displayed and sold in the Transparent Clinch Gallery Pop Up Art Tent, all in support of local charities, as noted by organizer Danny Clinch on the auction page. Clinch recounts how he asked Dave Grohl to create art and, despite Grohl’s busy schedule, the musician arrived at the festival with a Sharpie, ready to create art on “Prohibited Items” signage obtained from the festival fences just before gracing the stage before 30,000 spectators.
Clinch concludes, “Now that you’ve seen the drawings, it only makes the story and the art more ironic and iconic.” The auction winners will also receive a fine art print capturing Grohl’s festival performance, photographed and autographed by Clinch.
