ALLISON UNCHAINED: The Story Behind Candlebox “Far Behind”
Welcome to ALLISON UNCHAINED, where music meets its rawest, most unfiltered truth. Each week, we take you beyond the melody, breaking down the stories, inspirations, and creative chaos behind the most legendary songs of all time. From iconic riffs to behind-the-scenes drama, we uncover the moments that shaped the music we love.
This week, we take a look at Seattle rock outfit Candlebox and their 1993 breakthrough hit “Far Behind,” the third single from their self-titled debut album. The song was written as a tribute to Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone, who tragically died of a drug overdose in 1990. Wood was a close friend of Candlebox frontman Kevin Martin, though their relationship had deteriorated due to Wood’s addiction. The loss of his friend inspired Candlebox’s biggest hit, “Far Behind,” which helped propel the band to national prominence and landed them opening slots for acts like Rush, Metallica, The Offspring, and more.
