Hear AFI’s Powerful New Song ‘Behind the Clock’

AFI has announced their new album, Silver Bleeds the Black Sun…, and unleashed the bombastic lead single “Behind the Clock.”

For over 30 years, AFI — made up of singer Davey Havok, guitarist Jade Puget, bassist Hunter Burgan and drummer
Adam Carson — has blurred the lines between punk, goth and hard rock. Known for their constant reinvention, as well as their dynamic live shows, the band has forged a passionate fanbase that spans multiple generations of music lovers.

“Behind the Clock” is the latest addition to that legacy, a powerful, cinematic tune that engrosses listeners from the first note.

“It’s an exploration of life mirroring art versus art mirroring life,” Havok explained of the tune via press release. “In a grander sense, it’s about who is part of the art and who is made of the art.” That theme echoes the bigger message fans will hear when Silver Bleeds the Black Sun… arrives on Oct. 3.

“It’s a bit tongue in cheek,” Havok noted. “It addresses the concept of right and wrong, and good versus evil, and what is truly evil and is truly good, and whether or not there is such a thing, while also mocking organized religion.”

‘Silver Bleeds the Black Sun…’ Marks Latest Chapter for AFI

When a band has enjoyed the type of success and longevity that AFI has enjoyed, it becomes difficult to find new creative ground. Many acts — whether consciously or not — end up returning to sounds they utilized early in their career, but Havok was determined not to do that on Silver Bleeds the Black Sun…

“In our 33 years together, we’ve covered so much, musically, that I found myself daunted at the prospect of doing something different, and questioning what that would be,” the singer admitted.

Instead, AFI dug into their personal inspirations and began crafting a new direction that still felt very at home with their classic rock.

“We started with something that sounded like Echo & the Bunnymen,” Puget, who produced and engineered the album, explained. “But eventually we ended up with this melange of death rock and post punk all this stuff from the late ‘70s and early ‘80s that we grew up on, like Sisters of Mercy, and Bauhaus, and Siouxsie and the Banshees.”

Silver Bleeds the Black Sun… will be the 12th studio album of AFI career. Check out the band’s 2025 tour dates below.
