Drone metal standard bearers Sunn O))) have released a new track, “Butch’s Guns,” and expanded their 2026 touring schedule with newly announced UK and European dates.
“Butch’s Guns” appears on the duo’s forthcoming self titled album, due April 3 via Sub Pop. The sprawling track runs approximately 15 minutes, continuing the band’s signature emphasis on sustained distortion, amplifier worship, and tectonic pacing. It follows the previously released single “Glory.”
Sunn O))) recorded the album at Bear Creek Studios in Washington State with producer Brad Wood, known for his work with Sunny Day Real Estate. In statements about the sessions, Stephen O’Malley noted that the studio’s natural surroundings shaped the atmosphere of the record.
“The vast tracking room had big windows looking out on trees,” O’Malley said. “We could go hiking and be out in the woods, spend time outdoors. That became a big part of it.”
Greg Anderson described the environment as relaxed and creatively open. “There was no stress, no worry about the timeline or anything like that. We just let ourselves go, and let the music come out,” he said, adding that their recent performances as a stripped down duo have felt “fresh and exciting.”
The new album marks Sunn O)))’s first full length studio release since 2019’s Life Metal and Pyroclasts. In 2021, they issued the live album Metta, Benevolence, recorded for BBC Radio 6 Music. The band signed to Sub Pop in 2025 and previewed the new era with several singles, including “Eternity’s Pillars,” “Raise the Chalice,” and “Reverential.”
