White Denim are back with a new single, “Ruby,” offering another preview of their upcoming album 13, set for release April 24 via Bella Union. Alongside the release, the band has also announced an expansive run of North American and European tour dates stretching through the summer and fall.
“Ruby” follows previously released tracks “(God Created) Lock And Key” and “Hired Hand #2,” continuing to showcase the band’s signature genre-blurring approach. Led by frontman James Petralli, the new material leans into a groove-heavy mix of rock, funk, soul, and blues, while still pulling from unexpected textures and influences.
Speaking on the track, Petralli shared that “Ruby” has been years in the making, with its melody resurfacing periodically before finally taking shape through experimentation with vintage cassette recorders. That process helped spark a sonic direction rooted in classic rock tones while still pushing forward into something new.
The upcoming album 13 carries layered meaning, marking both the band’s thirteenth studio release and nodding to themes of duality. While the number is often associated with chaos or misfortune, it also represents independence and creativity, ideas that run throughout the record’s themes of family, survival, and artistic freedom.
