Skratch N’ Sniff heads into the first weekend of August with Surfer Girl’s “Slow Motion” serving as The Pier Song of the Week on Alternative Mix #709.
The Los Angeles-based band, led by former Aer vocalist Carter Reeves Schultz, brings together indie pop, alternative and reggae-rock without allowing any one style to completely define the music. “Slow Motion” is a clear example of that approach, pairing a warm, relaxed groove with a memorable vocal hook and an invitation to stop rushing through life.
The song feels built for the final stretch of summer. Its unhurried rhythm, bright atmosphere and laid-back delivery fit naturally within Surfer Girl’s catalogue while offering another preview of the band’s next album.
Midnight arrives August 21 through Ineffable Records and follows Surfer Girl’s 2025 album, Sunset. That project featured appearances from Collie Buddz, Bryce Vine, Bobby Alu and others, helping the group strengthen its connection to both the reggae community and the wider alternative landscape.
“Slow Motion” appears during Segment 4 of Alternative Mix #709, where it is joined by Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” remixed by De Soffer, Dominic Fike’s “Babydoll” remixed by Justin Antunes, Tame Impala’s “Breathe Deeper” remixed by Jaii O and Jesse James Pariah’s “Pariah.”
The full show continues Skratch N’ Sniff’s combination of exclusive-style remixes, alternative staples and new music.
Segment 1 opens with Fairlane’s reworking of Imagine Dragons’ “Believer” before moving through Beach Weather, In Color, Little Image and Bad Press. Empire of the Sun’s “Walking on a Dream” leads Segment 2, which also features The Haunted Youth’s “Deathwish,” a new version of No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak,” Julia Wolf’s “In My Room” and honestav’s mgk collaboration “Crash First.”
Segment 3 moves from Muse’s “Starlight” into Slightly Stoopid and G. Love’s “Back Seat Drivin’,” followed by remixes of Glass Animals and The Maine before closing with Death Cab for Cutie’s “Riptides.”
The final two hours of the show continue with M83, Milky Chance, Strange Case, The Unlikely Candidates, Cage the Elephant, Kings of Leon, Bob Moses, Temper City, Ecca Vandal and The Black Keys. Together, the selections create a show that can move from reggae-rock to indie pop, electronic production and guitar-driven alternative music without losing momentum.
Before the full weekend programming begins, the Friday Fix Mix offers a concentrated dose of the Skratch N’ Sniff sound. Running just under 15 minutes, the July 31 mix serves as a fast-moving introduction to the weekend and a quick fix for listeners who want the energy of the show in one continuous session.
The heavier side of the schedule arrives with Rock Mix #1225. This weekend’s Rock show includes remixed classics from Metallica, Foo Fighters, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Deftones, Disturbed, Rage Against the Machine and Creed alongside new music from Ninth Key, Marilyn Manson, Papa Roach featuring Hanumankind, Architects, From Ashes to New, Hollow Pact, Fozzy and The HU featuring Jonny Hawkins of Nothing More.
At the center of the weekend is “Slow Motion,” a song that proves Surfer Girl does not need to force the pace to make an impact. Its relaxed energy provides the perfect bridge between The Pier’s reggae and alternative community and the open-format approach that defines Skratch N’ Sniff.
