How Kurt Deimer’s “True” Became the Heart of A Grog Is Born

There is a moment on Kurt Deimer’s new album A Grog Is Born where the volume drops just enough for the message to cut through.

That moment arrives in “True,” a soaring rock anthem that serves as one of the emotional anchors of an album built on reinvention, resilience, and self discovery. While A Grog Is Born features everything from crushing hard rock to cinematic balladry, “True” may be the song that best captures where Deimer finds himself today: confident in his voice, grounded in his identity, and determined to stay connected to the principles that shaped him.

For Deimer, the song was born from a simple but increasingly relevant idea.

“I wrote ‘True’ because I wanted people to think about if you can just go through life and stay true to who you are, true to what your soul is all about, what your heart is all about,” he explains. “You’re going to have those moments where you might not stay true to yourself, but you’ve got to always try to remember to come back to your beliefs and your thoughts and your principles.”

It is a message that resonates throughout A Grog Is Born, an album that marks a significant leap forward from Deimer’s debut release. Years of touring alongside artists such as Geoff Tate, Tesla, Sebastian Bach, Buckcherry, Steel Panther, and Drowning Pool helped sharpen both his confidence and his vocal abilities.

“As I toured, that just kept building up my vocal cords and my strength,” Deimer says. “My voice came into itself. My voice is stronger than ever.”

That growth is evident throughout the record, particularly on “True,” where Deimer balances introspective lyrics with a widescreen rock sound crafted alongside producer Chris Lord-Alge. The track carries a nostalgic quality that feels intentionally timeless.

“I love the song because we kind of did it in a way where it’s like true Americana,” Deimer says. “It’s kind of nostalgic and you just jam that tune in the car.”

The song’s soaring guitar work and singalong chorus make it one of the album’s most immediate tracks, but beneath the hooks lies a deeper reflection on how easily people can lose themselves amid life’s pressures.

“I bet if people really look deep inside, the majority of people would find out, ‘I really do care about other people. I really do want to help other people. I really am a kind person,’ but life beats them up so bad that you tend to lose yourself and who you are.”

That sentiment mirrors the broader story behind A Grog Is Born. Inspired by family memories, personal loss, and Deimer’s evolution as both a musician and actor, the album represents what he describes as a rebirth.

“This year just feels like a big opening, like I’m being born into a whole new level of my craft in movies and in music.”

On an album filled with towering riffs, powerful collaborations, and larger than life characters, “True” stands apart because it strips everything back to a universal question: When the noise fades away, are you still the person you set out to be?

For Kurt Deimer, that answer has never sounded clearer.
