Mike D has released “Crypto,” the latest preview of his forthcoming debut solo album, Thank You, arriving August 28 through Capitol Records.
Driven by pounding industrial rhythms, warped synthesizers and Mike D’s instantly recognizable delivery, “Crypto” turns its attention toward financial obsession, fraud and unchecked greed. The song approaches those subjects with a characteristically playful edge, but the instrumental beneath it feels urgent and relentless.
“Where to go with that greed,” Mike D asks as the track moves through layers of distorted electronics and hypnotic percussion.
The new song arrives alongside an official visualizer and offers another look at the uncompromising sound Mike D has developed for Thank You. Rather than leaning entirely on the familiar hip-hop foundations of his work with Beastie Boys, the album explores a raw combination of electronic music, dub, punk, breakbeats and abrasive analog production.
“Crypto” is the fourth song released ahead of the 13-track album, following “Switch Up,” “What We Got” and “True Colors.” Together, the singles point toward a record built around rhythmic experimentation, dense electronic textures and Mike D’s ability to move between social commentary, humor and pure physical energy.
The project also represents more than a new solo release. It has introduced a new live band, Mike D 5D, whose lineup brings together two generations of musicians and two father-son collaborations.
Mike D performs alongside his sons, Skyler and Davis Diamond, while musician Eddie Ruscha is joined by his own son, Milo Ruscha. Guitarist and producer Will Graefe completes the group.
That family connection gives Mike D 5D a particularly distinctive identity. Instead of assembling a conventional backing band to recreate finished studio material, Mike D has built a collaborative unit around musicians who share personal history as well as creative chemistry.
The result is a multigenerational project that places Mike D and Eddie Ruscha alongside their sons while allowing each member to contribute to the band’s evolving sound. Graefe, whose work frequently moves between experimental rock, improvisation and songwriting, adds another flexible musical voice to the lineup.
For Mike D, the group represents a new way of performing after decades of influencing hip-hop, punk and alternative culture. The band carries some of the chaotic energy associated with his earliest work, but redirects it through live electronics, heavy percussion and arrangements designed to shift and expand onstage.
Mike D 5D will return to the road shortly after the release of Thank You, beginning with a sold-out August 30 performance at Royale in Boston. Sold-out shows in Washington, D.C. and Asheville will follow before the group continues to Atlanta, Queens and San Francisco.
The upcoming run includes a September 9 hometown-area performance at Knockdown Center in Queens and a September 26 appearance at Portola Music Festival in San Francisco.
With “Crypto,” Mike D continues to push the project beyond nostalgia. The single may carry the irreverence and rhythmic force listeners expect from him, but both the album and Mike D 5D are clearly focused on creating something new.
