Skratch N Sniff packed another 60-song weekend into the airwaves for August 22, with Rock Mix #1228 and Alternative Mix #712 bringing together new music, deep cuts, familiar favorites and the remixes that have defined SNS for more than two decades.
The Rock Mix leaned heavy, while the Alternative Mix moved between indie rock, alternative, electronic remixes and reggae-influenced summer sounds. The weekend also featured a special almost monday Mini Mix and Beach Fly and Shwayze’s “Summer Love” as ThePier.org Song of the Week.
Rock Mix #1228 Goes Heavy
Rock Mix #1228 opened with a run that immediately set the tone, kicking off with Linkin Park’s “Heavy Is The Crown” reworked by Synthtonix before moving into a Jonathan Davis remix of Hollywood Undead’s “Hear Me Now.”
New music remained at the center of the show with Royal Blood’s “Ten Over Ten,” Ryan Perdz’s “Blood On My Love,” Three Days Grace’s “Don’t Wanna Go Home Tonight,” From Ashes To New’s “Die For You,” Dead Poet Society’s “Cold,” Fozzy’s “I Know Evil,” and Letdown.’s “Do It For The Love.”
As always, SNS also dug back into some massive rock records and gave them a different life through the remix treatment. Tool’s “Schism” received an Entel remix, Korn’s “Freak On A Leash” was flipped by Morty, Toronto Is Broken took on Deftones’ “Be Quiet And Drive,” and Cevith reworked Foo Fighters’ “Best Of You.”
One of the more unexpected combinations came courtesy of Mike Czech with System Of A Down vs. Jay-Z’s “BYO 99 Problems,” continuing the show’s long tradition of throwing songs together that would rarely meet anywhere else on the radio.
The final stretch stayed just as heavy. Five Finger Death Punch’s “Bad Company” got the Steve Aoki treatment, CVLVALRI remixed Avenged Sevenfold’s “Hail To The King,” and Metallica’s “Fuel” was reimagined by Onur Ensert.
The show closed out with Disturbed, Papa Roach featuring Humankind, Green Day and Architects, whose “Broken Mirror” capped off Rock Mix #1228.
Alternative Mix #712 Moves Across the Spectrum
Alternative Mix #712 started with its own stacked opening run, beginning with De Soffer’s remix of Arctic Monkeys’ “R U Mine” and a Soy Sauce remix of Twenty One Pilots’ “Tear In My Heart.”
Royal Blood’s “Ten Over Ten” crossed over from the Rock Mix, while Hozier’s “Too Sweet” received the Gin And Sonic treatment and Strange Case brought “Waiting For The Weekend.”
Segment two mixed alternative staples with some of the genre’s newer voices. AFI’s “Miss Murder” was reworked by Pineo Loeb & Incline, followed by new music from Young The Giant with “Evergreen.” Cage The Elephant’s “Come A Little Closer” and Fitz And The Tantrums’ “Out Of My League” both received new remix treatments before Ecca Vandal’s “Cruising To Self Soothe” closed the segment.
The third hour continued with Beach Weather, Dead Poet Society, Julia Wolf, The Neighbourhood and Bad Press, balancing remixes with current alternative releases.
almost monday Take Over Segment Four
One of the weekend’s biggest features came in Segment Four with a special almost monday Mini Mix.
The San Diego trio have steadily become one of alternative pop’s most recognizable rising acts, and SNS gave them an entire block to showcase both where they have been and where they are heading.
The Mini Mix featured “Can’t Slow Down,” “Live Forever,” “No Regrets” and the song that first helped introduce the group to a wider audience, “Broken People.” Young The Giant’s “My Body” also landed in the middle of the takeover.
The feature arrives as almost monday continue the next chapter of their career following the release of THANK GOD IT’S ALMOST MONDAY, bringing their mix of indie pop, funk and alternative rock to an increasingly global audience.
Beach Fly and Shwayze Bring “Summer Love” to The Pier Song of the Week
Segment Five featured this week’s ThePier.org Song of the Week, Beach Fly featuring Shwayze’s “Summer Love.”
Released through Ineffable Records, “Summer Love” marks Beach Fly’s first new release following his debut album Flying and continues the laid-back combination of alternative pop, reggae influence and melodic songwriting that has defined his sound.
The pairing with Shwayze feels especially fitting for a track built around warm-weather energy. Beach Fly has also been touring alongside Shwayze, with additional dates alongside Passafire and Tropidelic helping bring the song into the heart of the summer touring season.
The track landed alongside Tame Impala’s “Let It Happen” remixed by OMNOM, Disco Lines’ take on Steve Lacy’s “Bad Habit,” NUG’s remix of Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s “Hunnybee,” and honestav featuring mgk’s “Crash First.”
Alternative Mix #712 finished by moving from Beck and Social Distortion into Foo Fighters and Weezer remixes before closing with Slightly Stoopid featuring G. Love’s “Back Seat Drivin’.”
Between 60 songs, a dedicated artist takeover, The Pier Song of the Week and remixes stretching from Metallica and Tool to Tame Impala and Steve Lacy, the August 22 weekend was another example of exactly what Skratch N Sniff does best: finding the spaces between rock, alternative, electronic music and everything surrounding them.
