At this point, trying to put Turnstile into a single genre feels increasingly pointless.
The Baltimore band have unveiled NEVER ENOUGH: VERSIONS, a sprawling 22-track reimagining of their acclaimed 2025 album NEVER ENOUGH, handing songs from the Grammy-winning record over to a wildly eclectic cast that stretches from Elton John and Hayley Williams to death-metal destroyers Dying Fetus.
And somehow, that’s only the beginning.
The collection also features contributions from Blood Orange, Slayyyter, Angel Du$t, Panda Bear, Four Tet, Alex G, Oklou, Julien Baker and more, turning NEVER ENOUGH into something closer to an open-source experiment than a conventional remix album.
The original album contained 13 tracks, but VERSIONS expands that number to 22 by allowing multiple artists to take swings at the same material. Instead of presenting one definitive alternate interpretation of each song, Turnstile have effectively handed over the keys and allowed their collaborators to pull the record in completely different directions.
Few tracks demonstrate that idea better than “BIRDS.”
Maryland death-metal veterans Dying Fetus and electro-pop provocateur Slayyyter have each created their own version of the song, putting two artists from radically different corners of music in conversation with the same Turnstile source material. Whatever stylistic boundaries might have existed around the original are essentially obliterated.
Then there’s Elton John.
The rock and pop icon contributes the collection’s sole alternate rendition of “SEEIN’ STARS,” adding another unexpected name to Turnstile’s increasingly surreal list of collaborators.
But the sheer variety represented on VERSIONS makes sense for a band that has spent the past several years refusing to remain inside hardcore’s traditional boundaries.
Turnstile’s 2021 breakthrough GLOW ON transformed the group from hardcore favorites into one of the most adventurous rock bands of their generation, taking the physicality of the scene that raised them and smashing it together with dream pop, alternative rock, funk and electronic music. NEVER ENOUGH pushed those impulses even further, treating genre less like a rulebook and more like a suggestion.
NEVER ENOUGH: VERSIONS takes that philosophy to its logical extreme.
Putting Dying Fetus, Elton John, Hayley Williams, Four Tet and Panda Bear under the umbrella of the same record would sound absurd for almost any other band. For Turnstile, it feels strangely inevitable.
The release also arrives as the band prepares to take NEVER ENOUGH back on the road. Turnstile’s NEVER ENOUGH TOUR PT. 2 kicks off Sept. 9 in Milwaukee and runs through Oct. 18 in Santa Ana, California.
If NEVER ENOUGH was Turnstile continuing to erase the borders around hardcore, VERSIONS blows through whatever was left of them.
