Alternative Mix #720: Iration, Sublime, Radiohead, and More
The October 17 Alternative Mix brought together 30 tracks across six segments, moving between indie rock, reggae, alternative, and dance music.
The show opened with Nautika’s remix of Blur’s “Song 2,” transforming the explosive Britpop anthem into a dance-floor-ready opener. Tame Impala’s “Breathe Deeper” received a fresh interpretation from Jaii O, while Beach Weather’s “New Aesthetics” and The Interrupters’ “Warrior Spirit” brought contemporary alternative energy to the first segment.
The second segment leaned into alternative nostalgia with DJZ’s Best Part Missing remix of The All-American Rejects’ “Move Along,” followed by Palaye Royale’s “Lost In Translation.” A mashup of The 1975’s “Somebody Else” and MGMT’s “Time To Pretend” from Leondis connected two generations of indie favorites.
Later, Twenty One Pilots’ “Stressed Out” received a Dave Winnel remix, while Zedd’s interpretation of Radiohead’s “Everything In Its Right Place” offered a different perspective on one of the band’s most recognizable electronic-influenced tracks. Death From Above 1979, Pixies, and LEAP rounded out the third segment.
The fourth segment shifted toward the reggae and alternative crossover that has long been central to Skratch N Sniff. Sublime’s “Doin’ Time” appeared in a Common Creation remix, followed by this week’s featured selection from Iration.
ThePier.org Song of the Week: Iration Reimagines “Falling”
Southern California reggae-rock favorites Iration returned with a new alternative-rock version of their RIAA gold-certified hit “Falling,” giving one of the band’s most successful songs a fresh identity.
The original track has accumulated more than 250 million streams across platforms, but this new recording takes the song in a more guitar-driven direction.
According to the band, the reimagined arrangement developed organically during live performances. As Iration began experimenting with a heavier version of “Falling” onstage, the response from audiences encouraged them to bring the arrangement into the studio.
The resulting “Falling (Remix)” was arranged by Iration musical director Lucas Sader, mixed by Grammy-winning engineer Ryan Hewitt, whose credits include Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Stadium Arcadium, and mastered by Emily Lazar, whose work includes Beck, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, and Sia.
Although Iration is best known for its reggae-influenced sound, the band has always maintained a strong connection to rock music, drawing inspiration from artists ranging from Blink-182 and Weezer to Tom Petty and Steve Miller.
The new version of “Falling” brings those influences forward, pairing the song’s familiar melodies with a more pronounced alternative-rock approach.
The track earned this weekend’s ThePier.org Song of the Week spotlight, appearing in Segment 4 alongside Sublime, Third Eye Blind, Fitz and the Tantrums, and Slum Beach Posse.
The Alternative Mix continued with Slum Beach Posse’s “Sun Come,” featuring DENM, Jesse James Pariah, and Landon McNamara, before moving into remixes of Cypress Hill, Young the Giant, Goo Goo Dolls, and Fall Out Boy.
The final segment featured Codefendants’ “The Fix,” Steve Lacy’s “Bad Habits” remixed by Disco Lines, and Dead Poet Society’s “Cold,” bringing the show to a close with a blend of hip-hop influences, dance production, and modern alternative rock.
Rock Mix #1236: Metallica, Soundgarden, Rob Zombie, and More
This weekend’s Rock Mix delivered another 30-track lineup, combining classic hard rock and metal with electronic remixes and contemporary releases.
The show kicked off with DJ Yves’ remix of Metallica’s “Sad But True,” followed by Steve Aoki’s take on Soundgarden’s “Spoonman.” Silent Theory’s “In My Bones” and Stretch’s remix of Turnstile’s “Blackout” kept the momentum moving before Nevertel closed out the opening segment with “Last Breath.”
Segment 2 brought together industrial rock, nu-metal, and rap-rock influences. Rob Zombie’s “Dragula” received a remix from Gold Bullets and Tiger Hood, while P.O.D.’s “Outbreak” featuring Cory Brandan added a contemporary heavy-rock selection. Powerman 5000’s “When Worlds Collide” and Incubus’ “Megalomaniac” appeared in remixed form before Codefendants’ “The Fix” closed the segment.
Codefendants’ appearance on both shows highlighted the group’s ability to move between alternative, punk, hip-hop, and heavier rock audiences.
The third segment featured Moonlight’s remix of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song,” Marilyn Manson’s “Exit Wound,” and D3fai’s remix of Evanescence’s “Bring Me to Life.” Dexter and the Moonrocks and Catch Your Breath rounded out the segment with “Freakin Out” and “Red Alert.”
Pearl Jam’s “Even Flow” received a Chemical Disco remix to open Segment 4, followed by Three Days Grace’s “Dominate.” Drowning Pool’s “Bodies,” grandson’s “Blood Water,” and Five Finger Death Punch’s “Nails In The Coffin” continued the show’s heavier direction.
The fifth segment paired AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” with a Crookers remix before bringing Dead Poet Society’s “Cold” back into the spotlight. Hollywood Undead’s “Hear Me Now” appeared in a Jonathan Davis remix, followed by Bring Me the Horizon and ILLENIUM’s “Slave To The Rithm” and Foo Fighters’ “Window.”
To close the show, System of a Down’s “Chop Suey!” received a Cortez remix, followed by Architects’ “Machine,” Nothing More’s “Angel Song” remixed by Jonathan Davis, Pop Evil’s “Trenches” remixed by DMC, and Holding Absence’s “Modern Life Is Lonely.”
The final stretch captured the range of the Rock Mix, connecting influential heavy bands with newer acts pushing the genre forward.
