Slum Beach Posse, the Southern California & Hawaii based musical collective featuring DENM, Landon McNamara, Jesse James Pariah and Benny Ranks, release their sophomore album ‘Slum Beach Posse Vol. 2’ today, October 23, via Slum Beach Records and Controlled Substance Sound Labs, the independent artist distribution division of Silverback Music.
The 11-track album continues the unlikely story that began when DENM assembled a crew of surfers, musicians, outsiders and longtime friends around a shared love of music and surf culture. With DENM serving as producer and sonic architect, the Posse transforms their individual voices, personalities and experiences into a sound that feels spontaneous, soulful and authentic.
“We really got to dive deep and spend intentional time creating this record. We’re thankful for these songs and for each other,” says DENM of the new album. “It’s a very special project for us, and we’re stoked to finally share it with everyone.”
For Vol. 2, the Posse returned to Oahu and spent considerably more time together creating the record, allowing the chemistry between its members to evolve, while expanding the cooperative to include appearances from featured guests Kanaka Fyah and Boostive.
Kanaka Fyah, a rising force on the Hawaiian reggae scene, notably joins on the album’s standout final track “Stuck Down”. With rhythmic acoustic guitar and unobtrusive lyrics, the song captures the coastal reverence that Slum Beach Posse has made its signature. The warm reggae groove builds with emotion, as lyrics offer a mantra of honest introspection and the healing power of the ocean.
Landon McNamara shares of the “Stuck Down” collaboration, “I met Ranz & Kanaka Fyah on the Big Island years ago, and as soon as I heard some of their stuff I was trippin’. He showed me the idea for ‘Stuck Down’ and I asked him to save that song for me because I was so moved by it. Years later, after they already blew up around Hawaii from “Only Jah Jah Knows”, he stayed true to his word and saved that song for us. DENM & Slum Beach Posse were out here recording for SBV2 at my house and Ranz came through to lay it down and the rest is history! We all push each other and explore uncharted territory in our music, if it feels right we run with it, this one feels right.”
Previously released singles “Sun Come” and “The Ocean” further illuminate the core members’ spiritual reverence for the ocean, an inspiration which has played a vital role within their coastal DNA. The soundscapes on the album capture the reflective soul of the Posse’s ethos, while maintaining a laid-back acoustic vibe that has become the foundation of the band’s evolving sonic palate since Vol. 1 released in 2023.
“If you really watch the ocean through the seasons and the years, you learn a lot about the ebbs and flows of life. Some days are warm and calm, some days are cold and stormy, and some days are pure fun. You just have to learn to ride the tides as they come and go,” DENM says of “The Ocean.”
The ensemble that makes up the Slum Beach Posse first came together during a week-long jam and recording session at McNamara’s home on Hawaii’s North Shore. What began as an organic creative experiment eventually became ‘Slum Beach Posse Vol. 1’, a breakout LP that has amassed more than 40 million combined streams across digital platforms.
“The music speaks for itself,” says Jesse James Pariah of the collaboration. “Our bond is much bigger than just a posse — we’re a family. Far from perfect, but we all share the same goal, which is to do your best and keep moving forward. Don’t let your past determine your future.”
