Alt rock icons Sleater-Kinney and Liz Phair are joining forces for a co-headlining U.S. tour this fall, bringing together two defining voices of 1990s alternative music for the first time.
Dubbed the “Flannel and the Fury” tour, the run kicks off September 6 in El Cajon, California and will hit major cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, and Boston before wrapping on September 21.
The tour title nods directly to the legacy both artists helped shape. In a statement, Phair described the run as a tribute to the era of female-fronted bands that fought for visibility in a male-dominated industry, noting both she and Sleater-Kinney came up through the Riot Grrrl-adjacent underground. Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker echoed that sentiment, citing Phair’s landmark album Exile in Guyville as a major influence and calling her a defining voice of the female experience in rock.
While the co-headlining dates form the core of the run, Phair will also play select solo shows around the same time, including stops in St. Paul, Portland, Maine, Albany, and an appearance at Oceans Calling Festival.
Both acts continue to carry serious legacy weight decades into their careers. Phair’s catalog remains anchored by Exile in Guyville, while Sleater-Kinney have continued evolving through releases like 2024’s Little Rope, maintaining their status as one of indie rock’s most enduring bands.
With a relatively tight run and a pairing that feels long overdue, the “Flannel and the Fury” tour stands out as one of the more compelling alt bookings of the year.
