Social Distortion Drop “The Way Things Were” Ahead of New Album Born To Kill

Social Distortion are closing out the rollout for their long-awaited new album with the release of “The Way Things Were,” the third and final advance single from Born To Kill, out now via Epitaph Records.

The track lands as a reflective centerpiece, channeling the band’s signature mix of grit and heart. Sonically and lyrically, “The Way Things Were” leans into the same emotional territory as classics like “Story of My Life,” pairing stripped-back storytelling with a sense of hard-earned perspective. Frontman Mike Ness delivers lines that feel both personal and universal, capturing themes of memory, identity, and the passage of time.

With Born To Kill, Social Distortion return after a 15-year gap between albums, delivering 11 tracks that balance raw energy with introspection. Early singles like the title track and “Partners In Crime” set the tone, blending punk urgency with classic rock influence, while “The Way Things Were” provides a more grounded and emotional counterpoint.

The album itself pulls from a deep well of influence, with nods to icons like Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and David Bowie woven into its DNA. At the same time, it feels distinctly Social Distortion, rooted in the band’s decades-long ability to turn personal struggle into anthemic songwriting.

To mark the release, the band made a return to Jimmy Kimmel Live!, bringing the new material to a national audience ahead of their upcoming tour.

That tour will see Social Distortion back on the road across North America through October, joined by Descendents and The Chats on select dates. With multiple shows already sold out, the run signals a strong return for a band that continues to resonate across generations.

More than four decades into their career, Social Distortion are not looking back so much as they are reframing their past. “The Way Things Were” captures that balance perfectly, honoring where they have been while pushing forward into what comes next.
