“Say Anything” is making their triumphant return and they’ve just dropped a shiny new single dubbed ‘Carrie & Lowell & Cody (Pendent),’ along with some exciting tidbits about their upcoming album.
In the recent cosmic timeline, our favorite indie rock legends, Say Anything, staged an epic comeback, stormed the stage, and blessed our ears with their first batch of band-born tunes since 2019’s ‘Oliver Appropriate.’ ‘Psyche!‘ and ‘Are You (In) There?‘ marked their triumphant re-entry into the music scene, brimming with fresh unity and purpose.
This upcoming album marks the glorious reunion of the mastermind behind the curtain, Max Bemis, and the production maestro, Brad Wood (known for his magic touch on bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and Mewithoutyou). You might recall Brad’s wizardry from Say Anything’s legendary double album, ‘…In Defense of the Genre.’
So, what’s the scoop on the inspiration behind ‘Carrie & Lowell & Cody (Pendent)’? According to Bemis himself, it’s got a name as snappy as an early Minus the Bear track, inspired by Sufjan Stevens‘ album about his mommy issues. Max loves his mom to the moon and back. He grew up entangled in a beautiful yet chaotic dance of emotions, navigating her emotional brilliance, warmth, and the heavy generational trauma from her Holocaust-stricken family.
It took them until middle age to engage in their first true epic showdown. It had stakes, and for a brief moment, they pondered the whole ‘let’s pretend we’re never going to talk again’ bit. This song, along with a chunk of their upcoming record, was born during a period of scorching heartache and loneliness. Not having his parental BFF by his side felt like a cosmic injustice, even though his mom had her own adult-sized dilemmas to tackle.
And because the Say Anything crew is all about giving you an unexpected twist, they figured it’d be a blast to serve you something spazzy and unconventional after the last poppy jam. So here it is, with all the time changes and that unmistakable Sherri vocal magic you’ve come to anticipate from the masters of musical mayhem.
